T Sport Bernau and Antonio Albacete made great progress at the first 2020 FIA ETRC round in Most, Czech Republic!
After several months of preparations, the team were well ready and excited for the 2020 FIA ETRC season to finally get underway at the end of August on Autodrom Most in the Czech Republic.
In order to conform with the current FIA championship health and safety regulations and to be able to deal with the current travel restrictions, the team did not only produce and load all of the spare parts we might need for the entire season, but we also committed ourselves to stay on the continent for several weeks until the season ends in November – if necessary. This was a decision that was made in order to stay flexible, to be able to adapt to the changing circumstances accordingly and to achieve the best possible results for our newly formed team in the course of this season.
Our trip to the opening round of the season in CZE started a couple of days earlier than usual. We decided to make a stop at garage Lunau in Germany, a workshop that we are free to use during the season, thanks to our ongoing partnership with Lunau GmbH Autoreparaturbetrieb. This also allowed us to get all the necessary paperwork and COVID tests done for our entire team before we made the final journey safely into the Czech Republic and to the Autodrom Most circuit.
After a day of setting up the paddock, Antonio and the team were eager to finally take the newly built T Sport Bernau race truck onto the track.
Testing on Friday was beneficial for Antonio as it was the first time we were able to test the changes that had been made after our tests in Nogaro a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, it didn’t take long to realise that the changes we made to the steering and the air system for the brakes were not working as hoped. The team worked until 3am on Saturday morning to check over all systems and to finally reset both the braking and steering systems back to the Nogaro test set-up, ensuring everything was working as well as possible for the 2 race days ahead.
The warm-up session on Saturday morning gave us little time to make sure the changes had been effective. At the qualifying Antonio finished P12. This was due to a lack of time to fully set up the brake air system between warm up and qualifying. The first race of the season came around and Antonio managed to get off with a really good start moving up to P6 within the first lap – gaining 6 places! Unfortunately, the race was red flagged after an incident and had to be restarted. On the restart Antonio got away well again, with another really good start. Unfortunately, a driver ahead of him missed a gear forcing Antonio to take action slowing his progress in order to avoid contact. The team was hoping to finish within the top 8. This would have resulted in a great starting position for race 2. Unfortunately, we were given a drive through penalty because of a problem with the new speed control system. Accordingly, Antonio finished in a P12 after once he served the penalty. Between races, the team had more time to optimise the setup. Therefore, Antonio was able to increase his pace and make up positions at the second race. Throughout the race, he continuously improved his lap times even further. The final result of the race left us in a strong P8, a great result showing some great promise for the rest of the weekend.
After a full service of the race truck on Saturday evening, everything was set up and ready for Sundays qualifying. This allowed Antonio to show that we could improve following the set-up changes on Saturday. We were able to progress from qualifying into the Superpole shootout for the first time with the new race truck. Antonio ultimately qualified in P9, a vast improvement from Saturday. The team were feeling confident ahead of race 3. Unfortunately, however, the race had to be stopped due to heavy rain. After a delay it was restarted later on in the day. With still extremely wet conditions out on the track, the race was started under yellow flags. This meant that no overtaking was allowed for the first lap. By the time the race finally got underway, the gap to the front runners was quite considerable. Antonio held his position finishing in P9 and the whole team were more than satisfied with the result. The timings showed that as Antonio became more comfortable with the truck and the set-up, we have the potential to be able to compete within the top 5 which is the pace we are aiming for. The team are confident that we will be able to race at that level very soon once we made a few more setup changes.
The whole team and Antonio will keep pushing as much as possible and are looking forward to the next challenge at the next round of the 2020 FIA European Truck Racing Championship.
T Sport Bernau und Antonio Albacete machen Fortschritte beim ersten Lauf der Saison 2020 der FIA ETRC im tschechischen Most!
Nach monatelanger Vorbereitung war das Team voller Vorfreude und mehr als bereit für den Auftakt der 2020 Saison der FIA Truck-Racing-Europameisterschat Ende August auf dem Autodrom Most in der Tschechischen Republik.
Um den neuen Gesundheits- und Sicherheitsvorgaben für Meisterschaften der FIA und den geltenden Reisebeschränkungen zu entsprechen, hat das Team bereits im Vorfeld einige Maßnahmen getroffen. So wurden etwa sämtliche eventuell benötigten Ersatzteile für die gesamte bevorstehende Saison vorab produziert und verladen. Außerdem haben wir uns dazu verpflichtet, bei Bedarf mehrere Wochen bis zum Ende der Saison im November auf dem europäischen Festland zu verweilen. Diese Entscheidung fiel, um unsere Flexibilität sicherzustellen, um uns rasch und entsprechend auf geänderte Umstände einzustellen und, um so im Verlauf der Saison die bestmöglichen Ergebnisse für das neu gegründete Team einzufahren.
Unsere Anreise zur Saisoneröffnung in Tschechien begann einige Tage früher als üblich. Wir beschlossen, einen Zwischenstopp bei der Lunau-Werkstatt in Deutschland, einer Werkstatt, die wir dank unserer fortlaufenden Partnerschaft mit dem Lunau GmbH Autoreparaturbetrieb im Laufe der Saison nutzen dürfen. Das bot uns die Möglichkeit, für das gesamte Team die notwendigen Papiere und COVID-Tests fertig zu machen, bevor wir uns auf die letzte Etappe unserer Anreise zum Autodrom Most in Tschechien machten.
Nach einem Tag des Aufbaus unserer mobilen Werkstatt im Fahrerlager waren Antonio und das Team schon ungeduldig darauf, den neu gebauten T Sport Bernau Renntruck endlich auf die Rennstrecke zu bringen.
Der Testlauf am Freitag war für Antonio ganz nützlich; schließlich war es unsere erste Möglichkeit, die Änderungen zu erproben, die wir seit unseren Probeläufen in Nogaro vor ein paar Wochen vorgenommen hatten. Leider stelle sich jedoch schnell heraus, dass die Änderungen an der Lenkung und dem Luftsystem für die Bremsanlage nicht die erhofften Ergebnisse brachten. Das Team arbeitete daraufhin bis spät in die Nacht daran, die Bremsanlage und die Lenkung wieder auf die Einstellungen der Testläufe in Nogaro zurück zu versetzen. Um 3 Uhr am Samstag-Morgen war dann alles bereit für die beiden bevorstehenden Renntage.
Das Warm-up am Samstag-Vormittag ließ uns jedoch wenig Zeit zum Überprüfen, ob die Änderungen auch wirklich erfolgreich waren. So landete Antonio beim Zeittraining schließlich auf dem 12. Platz, da die Zeit zwischen Warm-up und Qualifying nicht ausreichte, um die Bremsanlage optimal einzustellen. Als das erste Rennen eingeläutet wurde, gelang Antonio ein fulminanter Start, bei dem er bereits in der ersten Runde 6 Plätze gutmachte und so auf Platz 6 vorschoss. Leider wurde das Rennen nach einem Zwischenfall jedoch abgebrochen und musste später neu gestartet werden. Auch beim zweiten Anlauf kam Antonio wieder sehr gut davon. Allerdings verpasste es ein Fahrer vor ihm, rechtzeitig zu schalten. Das Zwang Antonio dazu etwas zu entschleunigen, um einen Zusammenstoß zu vermeiden. Dennoch hoffte das Team weiter auf eine Platzierung unter den Top 8. Das hätte uns für das zweite Rennen eine vielversprechende Ausgangsposition gegeben. Unglücklicherweise erhielten wir wegen eines Problems mit dem neuen Geschwindigkeitskontrollsystem jedoch eine Durchfahrtsstrafe, die Antonio schließlich wieder auf den 12. Platz zurückwarf. Zwischen den Rennen bot sich dem Team etwas mehr Zeit, um das Setup noch weiter zu optimieren. So konnte Antonio beim zweiten Rennen noch einmal einen Zahn zulegen und einige Plätz gutmachen. Zudem verbesserten sich seine Rundenzeiten im Verlauf des Rennens immer weiter. Am Ende landeten wir auf dem 8. Platz; ein vielversprechendes Ergebnis für den weiteren Verlauf des Rennwochenendes.
Nachdem der Renntruck am Samstagabend noch einem Rundum-Service unterzogen wurde, stand dem Zeittraining am Sonntag nichts mehr im Wege. Das bot Antonio die Möglichkeit zu beweisen, dass wir als Folge der Änderungen am Setup am Samstag weiter Boden gutmachen konnten. Das Zeittraining beförderte uns geradewegs in die SuperPole der besten 10; unsere erste mit dem neuen Renntruck. Antonio holte sich den 9. Startplatz. Im Vergleich zum Vortag war das eine durchaus beachtliche Verbesserung. Das stimmte das Team zuversichtlich für das bevorstehende dritte Rennen. Leider wurde das Rennen jedoch wegen starken Regens abgebrochen. Mit einiger Verzögerung wurde es dann im weiteren Verlauf des Tages neu gestartet. Aufgrund anhaltend feuchter Streckenverhältnisse, fand der Neustart jedoch unter gelber Flagge statt; das hieß also, dass in der ersten Runde nicht überholt werden durfte. Als das Rennen dann endlich so richtig los ging, war der Rückstand auf die vorderen Plätze jedoch schon ziemlich groß. Antonio gelang es, seinen Platz zu verteidigen und als Neunter ins Ziel zu fahren; ein Ergebnis, mit dem das Team mehr als zufrieden war. Die eingefahrenen Zeiten bewiesen: Je sicherer sich Antonio mit dem Truck und dem Setup fühlt, desto größer wächst unsere Chance mit den besten 5 mitzuhalten. Da wollen wir nämlich hinkommen. Das Team ist zuversichtlich, dass wir schon sehr bald Leistungen auf diesem Niveau liefern werden, wenn wir noch ein paar weitere Änderungen am Setup vorgenommen haben.
Zusammen mit Antonio Albacete wird das gesamte Team weiter an der Erreichung dieser Ziele arbeiten und freut sich folglich schon jetzt auf den nächsten Lauf der Saison 2020.
