PRESS RELEASE – 1. RACE MISANO, ITALY
Last weekend the T Sport Bernau team travelled to Misano, Italy for the inaugural round of the 2024 Goodyear FIA European Truck Racing Championship. The team were excited to finally get the season underway and see how the pace of our race truck would compare to the other competitors over a race weekend.
This year the T Sport Bernau truck looks very similar to 2023 however we are delighted that Teng Tools, Varta and PE have increased their brand awareness within the team and we have a new team partner for 2024, Dometic. Dometic offer smart and reliable products for people who enjoy outdoor activities and we are looking forward to welcoming them and their guests to our hospitality area this season.
At the opening round of the season, we were expecting over 100 guests on each race day from Varta, PE, BPW Italy and Briarwood Landini. This gave the team a lot of motivation to perform well although with the new regulations brought in for 2024 Antonio and the team engineers were nervous of how the new truck would perform.
These new regulations limit how much the front axle of the truck can bend and also see the introduction of a new Goodyear race tyre compound. There is also the introduction of a new qualifying format and points system for the championship points. The new qualifying format follows a similar system to Formula 1 with 3 qualifying sessions where the slowest drivers are eliminated after each session before finally deciding pole position in the final session. The championship points are now split into 2 categories and the drivers score points based on their category as opposed to the overall finishing order of the race. There were a lot of the teams and drivers to get their heads around heading into the first race.
The weekend got underway on Saturday morning with a free practice session allowing Antonio and the engineers to perfect the set up of the truck for the track conditions of the day. The first round of qualifying under the new format saw Antonio easily progress through the first 2 sessions and into the pole position shootout. After a great lap he ultimately qualified 3rd with 3 out of the top 4 drivers lap times being separated by only 0.02 of a second.
Antonio lined up on the second row of the grid and the first race of the season got underway. With all the drivers fighting for track position through the first few corners Antonio unfortunately got pushed wide and lost a position. Antonio was unfazed, recovering well and defending 4th position all the way to the chequered flag. A solid start to the season.
The second race got underway and Antonio made a fantastic start, moving up to 2nd position during the first few corners however due to a crash involving some other competitors the race was red flagged and had to be restarted in the original grid order. There was lots of action after the restart with all the drivers battling hard for position. There was lots of overtaking, contact and penalties handed out throughout the field. Antonio gave everything he had to try and gain places but ultimately had to settle for 6th position in the Titan category, 9th overall, at the chequered flag.
Sunday came around and offered a fresh start. With another great qualifying session Antonio managed to once again secure 3rd position on the grid. Luckily for Antonio the first race of the day was relatively uneventful and he was able to cross the line still in 3rd position, gaining the first podium finish of the season and some silverware for his efforts. Due to the reverse grid format Antonio started the last race of the weekend further down the order. However, he showcased his experience and driving skills to work his way up the order to bring the truck home in 3rd position, standing on the podium to receive a trophy once again.
Overall, the team is very pleased with the race pace and we feel confident that we have a good understanding of the new regulations and can look forward to being competitive throughout the whole season.
The team will now head to our good friends at Landini Briarwood where we will use their workshop to service our truck before heading to Slovakia for the second round of the championship in only one week’s time.

Am vergangenen Wochenende reiste das Team von T Sport Bernau ins italienische Misano zur Eröffnung und zum ersten Lauf der Goodyear-FIA-Truckracing-EM (Goodyear FIA ETRC) 2024. Mit viel Spannung hatte sich das Team schon darauf gefreut, endlich so richtig loszulegen und zu sehen, wie sich unser Renntruck im Vergleich zu denen unserer Mitstreiter im Verlauf des Rennwochenendes schlagen würde.
Dieses Jahr sieht der Truck von T Sport Bernau wieder ähnlich aus, wie schon 2023. Dennoch freuen wir uns sehr, dass Teng Tools, Varta und PE ihren Markenauftritt beim Team gesteigert haben und wir für die Saison 2024 mit Dometic noch einen weiteren Teampartner gewinnen konnten.
Dometic bietet smarte und zuverlässige Produkte für Leute an, die durch Autos, Camping-/Reisefahrzeuge oder Boote ermöglichte Outdoor-Aktivitäten genießen. Wir freuen uns darauf, Dometic und deren Gäste im Laufe dieser Saison auch in unserem Verpflegungs- und Bewirtungsbereich im Fahrerlager begrüßen zu dürfen.
Zum Eröffnungslauf erwarteten wir über 100 Gäste pro Renntag von Varta, PE, BPW Italy und Briarwood Landini. Das spornte unser Team natürlich zu einer guten Leistung an, obwohl Antonio und die Renningenieure unseres Teams ween des neuen Reglements, das ab der Saison 2024 gilt, doch durchaus etwas nervös waren, wie sich unser Truck schlagen würde.
Das neue Reglement beschränkt die maximale Biegung der Vorderachse und führt neue Goodyear-Rennreifen mit neuer Mischung ein. Darüber hinaus gilt nun ein neues Format für das Zeittraining und ein geändertes Punktesystem für die Meisterschaft. Das neue Qualifying ähnelt dem System der Formel 1 mit 3 Zeittrainingseinheiten, bei denen jeweils die langsamsten Trucks ausscheiden, bevor letztlich bei der abschließenden Einheit die Pole Position bestimmt wird. Die Wertungspunkte werden nun in 2 Kategorien aufgeteilt. Die Fahrer erzielen die Punkte entsprechend der Kategorie statt auf Basis des Zieleinlaufs. Das schaffte einigen Teams und Fahrern beim Auftakt zum ersten Rennen einiges an Kopfzerbrechen.
Das Wochenende begann am Samstagvormittag mit freien Trainingseinheiten, bei denen Antonio und die Ingenieure das optimale Setup für den Truck und die Streckenverhältnisse des ersten Tages ermitteln konnten. Beim ersten Zeittrainingslauf im neuen Format gelang Antonio problemlos in die zweite Runde und bis hin in die Entscheidung um die Pole Position. Mit großartigen Rundenzeiten schnappte er sich schließlich den 3. Startplatz, wobei die Fahrer auf Platz 2, 3 und 4 insgesamt nur 0,02 Sekunden auseinander lagen.
Antonio reihte sich zum Start des ersten Rennens der Saison also in der zweiten Startreihe ein. Während die Fahrer um die Platzierung kämpften, wurde Antonio leider bereits in den ersten Kurven weit abgedrängt und fiel eine Position zurück. Antonio blieb davon unbeirrt, holte sich den 4. Platz zurück und verteidigte diesen gut bis über die Ziellinie. Ein durchaus sehenswerter Saisonauftakt.
Beim Start des zweiten Rennens kam Antonio sehr gut davon und schob seinen Truck bereits in den ersten Kurven auf den 2. Platz vor. Wegen des Crashs zwei anderer Teams, wurde das Rennen jedoch leider abgebrochen und in der ursprünglichen Startaufstellung neu gestartet. Nach dem Neustart war einiges an Action geboten, während sich die Fahrer erbitterte Positionskämpfe lieferten. Im Feld reihten sich Überholmanöver an Zusammenstöße und Strafen. Antonio gab alles, musste sich am Ende aber doch mit dem 6. Platz in der Kategorie Titan und dem 9. Platz in der Gesamtwertung zufrieden geben, als er an der karierten Flagge vorbei fuhr.
Am Sonntag war wieder alles offen. Bei den Zeittrainings holte sich Antonio erneut den 3. Platz in der Startaufstellung zum 3. Lauf am Wochenende. Zum Glück für Antonio und unser Team war das erste Tagesrennen ein sehr ereignisreiches. So konnte Antonio den Truck über die Ziellinie bringen, wie er gestartet war: auf Platz 3. Das brachte ihm und dem Team die erste Podiumsplatzierung und damit wichtige Punkte und Medaillen für die Anstrengungen ein.
Aufgrund der Umkehrregelung, ging Antonio dann jedoch das letzte Rennen am Wochenende von einem der hinteren Plätze an. Dennoch stellte er sein Können erneut unter Beweis und fuhr den Truck schließlich wieder auf dem 3. Platz über die Ziellinie und holte sich damit erneut eine Podiumsplatzierung und weitere Trophäen.
Alles in allem ist das Team mit dem Ausgang des ersten Laufs der Saison sehr zufrieden. Wir denken, dass wir das neue Reglement gut verinnerlicht haben und zuversichtlich auf ein gutes Abschneiden im weiteren Saisonverlauf blicken können.
Das Team reist jetzt zu unseren guten Freunden von Landini Briarwood, wo wir deren Werkstatt für den Service an unserem Truck nutzen werden, bevor wir die Reise in die Slowakei zum zweiten Lauf der Saison schon nächste Woche fortsetzen.
