Last weekend the T Sport Bernau team made the journey all the way across Mainland Europe to the most easterly race of the 2020 season at the famous Hungaroring near Budapest, Hungary.
The team were the first to arrive in the paddock on Wednesday, having made the long drive from the previous race in Jarama near Madrid. The race weekend in Hungary was a challenging race to organise with the current COVID travel restrictions, however the event was given the go ahead by the organisers and we were incredibly happy to be able to take part. The event was, unfortunately, only allowed to run with a limited number of visitors being allowed into the circuit. However, the races were broadcast both live on mainstream TV as well as online via a live stream, meaning all our fans could still follow the action closely throughout the weekend.
The on-track action began on Friday with 2 free practice sessions. This was especially useful for the T Sport Bernau team as it gave us the opportunity to trial some new anti-roll blades that had been sent to the circuit from our partners at PE in Germany. During the practice sessions it was clear that the new equipment was working well, giving Antonio and the engineers more set up options to use throughout the weekend.
Saturday began early with a warmup session to give the teams a chance to assess the track conditions before qualifying. It was raining heavily on Saturday, so this session gave the team a chance to check that the truck was properly set up for the wet conditions. Qualifying came around and Antonio and the team did a fantastic job, finishing the first part of qualifying in a fantastic 2nd position, easily progressing into the super pole session, before ultimately qualifying in a very well-deserved 4th position for the first race.
The rain continued to fall as the start of the first race came around, Antonio got a fantastic start, holding his 4th place position. After a lot of close fought battles throughout the race, mostly with 2019 champion Jochen Hahn, Antonio managed to bring the truck home, holding his 4th place and narrowly missing out on a podium place. The reverse grid for the second race saw Antonio starting from 5th position. Once again Antonio got off to a great start. Fighting hard throughout the race, Antonio managed to gain a place, once more bringing the truck home in 4th position. The truck had a few battle scars from the days racing which the engineers worked to repair throughout the evening along with the normal nightly service, ensuring the truck is in the best possible condition for Sunday’s racing.
Sunday morning and the weather had changed, bringing dry conditions to the Hungaroring circuit, meaning the team would once again have to adapt the set up of the truck. After the early morning warmup session qualifying soon came around. Antonio again comfortably made it through to the second part of qualifying, super pole, where he qualified 4th position for the first race of the day. Antonio got another great start, holding his position well, battling hard throughout the first lap trying to gain a place from reigning champion Hahn. After a close fought race Antonio brought the truck home, holding his 4th place position and again only narrowly missing out on a podium position. Once again, the reversed grid meant Antonio would start the second race from 5th position. During the first few laps Antonio was caught up in a lot of battles as the quick starting Hungarian Norbert Kiss worked his way through from the back of the grid, fighting hard to make up places at his final home race of the season. Antonio put up a good fight and despite a few bumps and scrapes he managed to finish the race in 8th position overall, collecting yet more valuable championship points.
Overall, Antonio and the team are extremely happy with this weekend’s results, bringing a good haul of championship points, promoting Antonio to 6th in the 2020 championship standings. The team is continuing to develop the new race truck and we are extremely happy with the progress that is being made. The engineers will continue to work on some more adaptations and improvements over the next 3 weeks before we take to the Misano circuit, in Italy, for the final race weekend of the 2020 FIA European Truck Racing Championship on the 14th/15th November.
Am vergangenen Wochenende reiste das Team von T Sport Bernau quer durch das europäische Festland zum östlichsten aller Rennen der Truck-Racing-Saison 2020 an den Hungaroring unweit der ungarischen Hauptstadt Budapest.
Das Team erreichte das Fahrerlager als erstes; trotz der langen Anreise vom letzten Rennen in Jarama unweit von Madrid in Spanien. Obgleich das Rennwochenende in Ungarn angesichts der Reisebeschränkungen im Zusammenhang mit der COVID-Pandemie eine organisatorische Herausforderung war, gelang es den Veranstaltern, den Lauf stattfinden zu lassen. Wir schätzen uns äußert glücklich, dass wir an diesem Rennen teilnehmen konnten. Zwar durfte nur eine stark begrenzte Anzahl an Zuschauern vor Ort an der Veranstaltung teilnehmen, doch wurden die Rennen live im Fernsehen und in einem Online-Livestream ausgestrahlt. So konnten auch unsere Fans die spannenden Rennen live mitverfolgen.
Auf die Rennstrecke ging es bereits am Freitag, als zwei freie Trainingseinheiten auf dem Plan standen. Diese boten dem T Sport Bernau-Team die Möglichkeit, neue Stabilisatoren auszuprobieren, die unser Partner PE aus Deutschland an die Rennstrecke hatte liefern lassen. Während der Trainingseinheiten wurde schnell klar, dass sie hervorragende Dienste leisteten. Das verschaffte Antonio und den Technikern nochmal weitere Möglichkeiten, das Setup für das Wochenende entsprechend anzupassen.
Am Samstag ging es schon früh zum Warm-up. So konnten die Teams noch vor dem Zeittraining die Streckenverhältnisse einschätzen. Am Samstag regnete es ziemlich stark. So konnte das Team sicherstellen, dass das Setup des Trucks auch auf nasser Piste gut funktionierte. Als das Zeittraining dann auf dem Plan stand, leisteten Antonio und das Team großartiges. Die erste Hälfte des Qualifyings beendete Antonio auf Platz 2, kam problemlos in die Superpole und holte sich schließlich den 4. Startplatz für das erste Rennen.
Auch als das erste Rennen angepfiffen wurde, hatte der Regen noch nicht nachgelassen. Antonio kam vom Start an gut davon und hielt seine Position wacker. Nach einem Rennen mit engen Zweikämpfen, vor allem mit Jochen Hahn, dem Truck-Racing-Europameister des Jahres 2019, brachte Antonio seinen Truck schließlich auf Platz 4 ins Ziel und fuhr damit nur knapp am Podium vorbei. Wegen der Umkehrregelung ging er das zweite Rennen vom 5. Startplatz aus an. Abermals kam Antonio gut ins Rennen. Im Verlauf des Rennens kämpfte er hart, schob seinen Truck einen Platz nach vorne und kam schließlich erneut als 4. über die Ziellinie. Am Ende des Renntags und einiger Zweikämpfte blieb der Truck auch nicht ganz ohne Narben. Den Abend verbrachten die Techniker dann damit, die Narben zu beseitigen und mit dem üblichen, nächtlichen Service. So konnten sie sicherstellen, dass der Truck am Sonntag wieder gut in Schuss war.
In der Nacht zum Sonntag gab es dann einen Wetterwechsel. Der nun trockene Hungaroring bedeutete für das Team aber auch gleichzeitig, dass das Setup des Trucks nun wieder auf die geänderte Rennwetterlage angepasst werden musste. Nach dem frühmorgendlichen Warm-up stand schon bald das Zeittraining an. Antonio kam wieder problemlos in die zweite Hälfte des Qualifyings, in die Superpole, und sicherte sich erneut den 4. Startplatz für das erste Rennen des zweiten Renntags. Erneut kam er gleich beim Start gut weg, hielt seine Position und lieferte sich bereits in der ersten Runde enge Zweikämpfe mit dem amtierenden Meister Jochen Hahn, um diesem seinen Platz streitig zu machen. Nach einem hart umkämpften Lauf, fuhr Antonio erneut auf dem 4. Platz ins Ziel und damit wieder nur um Haaresbreite am Podium vorbei. Durch die Umkehrregelung hieß das für Antonio erneut Platz 5 beim Start des zweiten Tagesrennens. Im Verlauf der ersten Runden sah er sich dann schnell in zahlreiche Zweikämpfe verwickelt, während sich der flott gestartete, ungarische Lokalmatador Norbert Kiss bei seinem letzten Heimrennen des Wochenendes von den hinteren Rängen quer durchs Feld Platz für Platz nach vorne arbeitete. Antonio gab nicht auf und schlug sich (trotz des einen oder anderen Stoßes oder Kratzers) sehr gut und konnte schließlich auf den insgesamt 8. Platz fahren und dabei wichtige Punkte für die Meisterschaft einsammeln.
Alles in allem sind Antonio und das Team mit den Ergebnissen des Wochenendes überaus zufrieden, bei denen es erneut gelang das Punktekonto für die Meisterschaft weiter aufzufüllen. Gleichzeitig stieg Antonio in der Meisterschaftstabelle der Saison 2020 auf Platz 6 auf. Das Team arbeitet weiter am Ausbau und der Optimierung des neuen Renntrucks und ist mit dem bislang erzielten Fortschritt äußerst zufrieden. Die Techniker werden in den kommenden drei Wochen weiter an Anpassungen und Verbesserungen arbeiten, ehe es dann am 14./15. November für den letzten Lauf der Truck-Racing-Europameisterschaft 2020 der FIA ins italienische Misano geht.
